Description

Chateau Beausejour de Bonalgue is the second wine of Chateau Bonalgue. The Chateau is located in the Pomerol wine growing appellation of Bordeaux’s right bank.

The history of Chateau Bonalgue dates back to the French Revolution when there is a first reference to vines in the “Graves de Bonalgue” area appeared in local archives. A veteran from Napoleon’s Grand Army, Captain Rabion, inherited the land and built a handsome residence. The building housed his regimental arms, and the garden was filled with magnificent Lebanese Cedar trees; Chateau Bonalgue was born. The Bourotte family bought Chateau Bonalgue in 1926 and it remains in the same family today. The vineyard today is in excellent condition, and the property continues to improve and to refine its methods, while always paying tribute to the exceptional terroir of Bonalgue. As well as Bonalgue, the Bourotte family also own Clos du Clocher and Château Monregard La Croix in Pomerol, Château Les Hauts-Conseillants in Lalande de Pomerol and Chateau du Courlat in Lussac Saint-Emilion amongst others.

The plot of vines that produce Chateau Beausejour de Bonalgue are adjacent to the Chateau Bonalgue vineyard. The plot originally belonged to Chateau Bonalgue but was then sold to the Combezoux Vauthier family who operated the vineyards until 2008 (when it was known as Chateau Burgrave). The Bourotte family purchased the property in 2011 and now make the wines here.

The Chateau Beausejour de Bonalgue plot comprises 1 hectare and is planted with 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The soil is predominantly clay-limestone with a the rich band of iron-ore that so distinguishes the Pomerol terroir. These qualities make this a heat-retaining soil, that means grapes ripen early and evenly, reaching perfect maturity. Great care is taken in the vineyard with pruning, leaf thinning, debudding, green harvesting. Precise and meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard means they produce quality grapes year after year. The wine is vinified in a traditional manner cement tank followed by a period of maturation of 12 months in second fill French oak barrels.

Production is around 6000 bottles per vintage.

Tasting Notes

Chateau Beausejour de Bonalgue is a stylish Merlot dominated wine, very aromatic with a good body and a lot of fruit. There are aromas of dark berry fruits, blackberry and plum with hints of cocao, tobacco and a hint of vanilla-y oak. The palate has more dark fruits, a hint of liquorice, fine-grain tannins and good acidity. Nice length.

Food Pairing

Drink with red meats, lamb with sauce and small game birds.  Try with mushroom risotto or with hard mature cheeses.
