Chateau Carlmagnus Imagine 80th Anniversary is a special anniversary bottling of Fronsac from Bordeaux to commemorate what what would have been John Lennon’s 80th birthday in 2020.
Chateau Carlmagnus is is owned and run by winemaker, artist and former French fencing champion Arnaud Roux-Oulié. His grandfather, Ernest Roux, had bought Chateau Lague in the 1950s and Arnaud is the third generation of winemakers his family. Roux-Oulié took over the estate at the young age and purchased two hectares of vineyards planted on a limestone and clay slope of a rise close to the Tertre de Fronsac. This would become Chateau Carlmagnus. The estate is named after the Emperor Charlemagne who, stayed in, and built a fortress in the region. Since then Roux-Oulié has acquired another property, a Bordeaux Superieur called Chateau Francs-Magnus. From 2020 the first organic wines from both estate will be released under the Ecocert label and eventually all production will be organic and no synthetic insecticides or treatments will be used.
The Chateau Carlmagnus Imagine 80th Anniversary bottling is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. After harvest, the grapes are sorted and then vinified without crushing. Daily pump-overs and punch-downs were carried out. The wines was then aged for 12 to 14 months in oak barrels (30 to 40% new oak, depending on the vintage).
Also available in magnums.
Chateau Carlmagnus has a dark red colour. The nose has aromas of ripe red and black fruiting including dark berries, ripe plums, blueberries and mulberry. There are also aromas of spice and a hint of oak. The palate has a firm, juicy mouthfeel with more dark berry fruit and ripe tannins. Good length, fresh with a drying finish.
Perfect with roast beef or lamb or barbequed lamb chops.
