Chateau Cos d’Estournel Les Pagodes de Cos is the second wine of the this highly-esteemed St Estephe 2nd growth. Les Pagodes de Cos was first released in 1994 and is produced from the estate’s younger vines (albeit with an age of around 40 years old).

Chateau Cos d’Estournel itself, sits in the midst of 70 hectares of vineyard. These are located between Pauillac and St Estephe and only separated from the vineyards of Lafite by the stream known as La Jalle du Breuil (The Breuil Brook). The Hill of Cos (‘Cos’ means ‘The Hill of Pebbles’ in the old Gascon language) dominates the Gironde from the height of almost 65 feet. The estate was founded by Louis Gaspard d’Estournel in 1811 and has passed through many owners. Shortly after Louis Gaspard died in 1852 the new owner began to sell the wines on La Place and the Chateau classified as one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growths) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.

The estate has been owned since 2000 by entrepreneur Michel Reybier. Since 2000, Cos d’Estournel has undergone a massive investment scheme whilst keeping respect for the land and the men and women of the estate. Programs have included the complete overhaul of the château and the Chartreuse, highly innovative studies of its vineyard and the design and installation of state-of-the-art gravity fed winery.

The vineyards of Chateau Cos d’Estournel are planted on gravelly soils with with approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot with some tiny plots of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Les Pagodes de Cos was first released in 1994 and is produced from the estate’s younger vines (albeit with an age of around 40 years old).

The 2009 vintage is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot.

Tasting Notes

From Cos: “The 2009 vintage starts out soft and seductive on the palate, going on to show magnificently well-defined flavours of wild berries, blackcurrant, and cinnamon. A real treat! The tannins have softened and the wine now has a beautiful satin texture. There is a subtle, underlying warmth that makes it rise far above its supposed rank in the Médoc hierarchy. In fact, 2009 Pagodes de Cos is on a par with numerous grands vins. It is clearly an outstanding, generous, perfectly ripe wine with sumptuous finesse.”
