Description

Chateau Godeau is a red wine classified as a St Emilion Grand Cru. The estate is located in the commune of Saint Laurent des Combes.

The current owners of Chateau Godeau, Albéric et Agnès Florisoone,  purchased the estate in 2012. They were previously co-owners of the prestigious Chateau Calon Segur in St Estephe and have a long family tradition of wine-making. The previous American owners,  Steve and Alexandra Filipov, who had owned the Chateau from 2007, invested significantly to modernise and renovate the estate.

The estate comprises some 7 hectares of vineyards located in the heart of Saint-Emilion’s prestigious vineyards close to famous neighbours like Chateau La Mondotte and Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf. They are some of the highest vineyards in the appellation at 103m above sea level. The vineyards are primarily situated on limestone / clayey soils which allows good drainage but it also good for retaining moisture. The vineyards have a steep north / north west aspect and the vines have an average age of 45 years old. The vineyards are suited to Merlot mainly and are planted with 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

After harvest the grapes are sorted both mechanically and automatically. Different parcels are vinified separately in small thermoregulated vats which allows for tight control over the vinification process. Intervention is minimal, for example punching down of the cap is manual and is preferred over mechanical pumping. After alcoholic fermentation the wine is aged in French oak barrels, up to 50% new depending on the vintage, and it is here that the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 18 months, one third in new French oak, after which the various parcels are blended and bottled. Annual production is around 30,000 bottles.

Chateau Godeau 2018 is a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

The world-renowned Stéphane Derenoncourt, and his team, are consultant winemakers.
