Description

Chateau La Lagune is located in the Haut-Medoc wine appellation of Bordeaux. It was one of only fourteen 3rd growths (3eme cru classe or troisieme cru) in the historic Bordeaux wine classification of 1855. This remains the highest rating for an Haut-Medoc property. It is located in the commune of Ludon.

Chateau La Lagune was founded in 1724 has had a varied history. After World War 2, the estate was rescued from dereliction when it was bought by Georges Brunet in 1958 and subsequently sold to the Ducellier family who owned Champagne Ayala in 1962. In 2000 both La Lagune and Ayala were sold to the Frey family. They sold Ayala to Champagne Bollinger and acquired Maison Jaboulet in the Rhone. Today the estate remains in the Frey family and has been owned and run by oenologist Caroline Frey since 2004.

The estate comprises some 80 hectares of vineyards planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Since 2013 Caroline has been practising eco-friendly viticulture and the estate has been undergoing organic conversion.

Chateau La Lagune 2009 is a blend of blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot. The various vineyard plots are all vinified separately in temperature controlled stainless steel. The wine is new French oak barrels (50 to 60% new each vintage) for 18 months before bottling.
