Chateau La Tour de Mons is a wine and estate located in the Margaux wine growing appellation of Bordeaux, in the commune of Soussans. It was classified as a Cru Bourgeois in 1936 and has retained its Cru Bourgeois rank ever since and in the most recent 2010 classification.
Chateau La Tour du Mons has a long history and the origins of the Château date back to the 13th century. It is names after Pierre de Mons, who renamed the property after purchasing it in 1623. The estate has been owned and managed by the CA Grands Crus company, a fully-owned subsidiary of the Groupe Crédit Agricole, since 2012. They also own other chateaux including Château de Rayne Vigneau in Sauternes, Château Grand-Puy Ducasse in Pauillac and Château Meyney in St Estephe. Since the 1990’s, a major renovation programme has been implemented by the new owners: construction of a new winery and an air-conditioned storage cellar, major drainage programme and management of the vineyard in the interests of sustainable ecological practices.
Chateau La Tour de Mons is a single block vineyard, surrounded by a wall and located in the northern part of the Margaux appellation near the banks of the Garonne. The vineyard lies on Garonne gravel and limestone-clay. The average age of the vines is 30 years old, split between 61% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards cover some 48 hectares. The grapes are hand harvested and undergo a rigorous selection at the winery. The various plots are vinified separately and aged for 12 months in French oak, 40% new, 60% one year old, prior to blending and assembling the final cuvee.
Chateau La Tour de Mons displays a very broad aromatic range that combines woody, spicy and fruity notes. Elegant and distinguished, this enticing wine, rich in density and concentration with a fine tannic structure offers a fantastic potential for ageing.
Chateau La Tour du Mons delivers a refined nose with delicious fruit, spices and roasted notes. In the mouth, the balance between elegance and power is perfect. The tannic structure is tight, fleshy and tasty.
