Chateau Le Gay Pomerol (not to be confused with other Chateau Le Gays) can trace its origins back to the 1850’s when it was known as Domaine Le Gay. Most recently, in 2002, the property was acquired by Catherine Péré-Vergé, the owner of some other Pomerol estates including Chateau La Violette and Chateau Montviel. Chateau Le Gay has some 10.5 hectares of vineyards, just to the north of the Pomerol plateau, (it is quite a small estate).
The vines at Chateau Le Gay have an average age of over 40 years old and yields are very small, as low as 15 to 20 hectolitres per hectare. The wines are typically a blend of around 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, aged in oak casks for 18 to 20 months, and are characterised by great depth and complexity.
Since 2004 Michel Rolland has been consultant winemaker. Production for the Chateau Le Gay grand vin is around 1200 cases per year.
