Description

Chateau Les Barraillots is located in the heart of the Margaux wine growing appellation nestled amongst some very famous Chateaux including Rauzan Gassies and Marquis de Terme with some of the estate actually abutting Chateau Margaux itself.

Chateau Les Barraillots was established in 1928 by Mr Ferdinand Brunet who bought parcels of vineyards from Chateau Palmer in 1928 and Chateau Dufour in 1933. Mr Brunet was originally a cooper who worked at Chateau Margaux and intended to make wine for his own consumption. Ferdinand’s son took over in the 1950s developing the business until Michel Brunet took over in 1963 and expanded further by planting more vineyards. Since 2002 Michel’s son Yannick has been managing the Chateau. The name Barraillots derives from the name of the small fences, the “barrails” that surround the parcels of vines.

The vineyards of Chateau Les Barraillots cover some 7 hectares and a planted on predominantly gravely hilltops, some of the higher vineyards in the appellation. The vineyards are planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot with an average vine age of 40 years old. In the vineyard the is careful management with green harvest, leaf removal and limiting 8 bunches of grapes per vine. After mechanical harvest the grapes are sorted at the winery. The wine is vinified in the traditional manner in thermo-regulated stainless steel and concrete vats. The wine is aged for 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which are new.

Production is around 40,000 bottles per year.
