Chateau Les Hauts Conseillants 2016 presented in a 3 Litre Double Magnum in a wooden box. Perfect for a special occasion.
Chateau Les Hauts Conseillants is located in the Lalande de Pomerol wine-growing appellation of Bordeaux. Lalande de Pomerol is situated on the right bank of the River Gironde to the north of the Pomerol appellation itself and to the east of Saint-Émilion. It is a region known for producing high-quality red wines but at a fraction of the cost of the wines of Pomerol. Chateau Les Hauts Conseillants os one of the most highly-regarded wineries of the appellation.
Chateau Les Hauts Conseillants is owned by the Figeac-Bourotte family who also own Chateau Bonalgue and Clos du Clocher in Pomerol and Chateau du Courlat in Lussac-Saint-Emilion. The estate’s origins stretch back to 1973 when Leopold Figeac and his son-in-law Pierre Bourotte purchased 5 hectares of vineyard in Lalande de Pomerol. 1973 was also the year that Pierre’s son Jean-Baptiste Bourotte was born. Today John-Baptiste is in charge of the company and the wine is made in consultation with Michell Rolland and Christian Veyry.
Today there are 10 hectares of vineyards. There are two distinct parcels of vines. 6 hectares of vineyards which are situated on sandy-clayey soils with gravelly subsoil (on the Chevrol plateau in Neac). There are also 4 hectares situated on a gravelly outcrop with 10% clay in Lalande. The vineyards are planted with 85% Merlot and the rest Cabernet.
The grapes are harvested by hand into small crates with sorting before and after destemming on vibrating sorting tables. The wine undergoes traditional vinfication, each plot is vinified separately, there is manual pumping over and a maceration of one month. After alcoholic fermentation the wine is aged for 18 months in fine-grained French oak barrels (35% new, 65% second fill) with 1 or 2 rackings per year. There are approximately 40,000 bottles produced per vintage.
The cuvée for Chateau Les Hauts Conseillants is composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc.
Decant an hour or two before serving.
There are several benefits to buying a 3 Litre Double Magnum of Chateau Les Hauts Conseillants 2016. The key one is that a larger format bottling allows the wine to age and evolve more gracefully (so great for cellaring) which can provide a more complex and nuanced drinking experience. Double magnums are also an impressive addition to any wine collection or celebratory occasion. They are also rare.
Chateau Les Hauts Conseillants deep, garnet red colour. The nose has aromas of ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit alongside more savoury, smoky, herbaceous and okay notes. This is rich and medium to full bodied wine on the palate with an abundance of black fruits flavours (blackberry and black currant), some savoury spicy naunces and a hint of vanilla-y oak. It is well structured with chewy tannins and a firm, mineral back bone with lengthy, dry finish.
Chateau Les Hauts-Conseillants is perfect with beef or venison dishes, try with roast beef or pan-fried venison steaks. It is also great with mature hard cheeses.
