Chateau Ste Michelle Merlot is a red wine made from predominantly Merlot grapes sourced from vineyards in the Columbia Valley.
Chateau Ste Michelle is the oldest winery in the Columbia Valley and was founded in 1954. It is located in Woodinville, Washington, near Seattle. The grapes for Chateau Ste Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon are sourced from Columbia Valley vineyards in eastern Washington including the company’s Cold Creek, Canoe Ridge Estate and Indian Wells vineyards. The Columbia Valley vineyards lie in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains and receive just 6-8 inches of rainfall annually. The climate is characterised by warm, sunny days and cool evening temperatures create ideal conditions for intense aroma and flavor development in the ripening grapes.
After harvest grapes are destemmed and inoculated with various strains of yeast to maximize complexity. There is a gentle pump over during fermentation which helps to used to extract colour and flavour and produce soft, supple tannins. The wine is aged for 14 months in oak.
The 2016 is a blend of around 92% Merlot with some Syrah and other grape varieties.
