Here is a fantastic 6 bottle selection of wines that would be great for Christmas. We have included a selection of classic wines (a white Burgundy from Louis Jadot and Chateau Lagrange 2010 from St Julien) but there are a couple of more eclectic items too. There is the superb Hampshire Sparkling Wine from Raimes near Alresford as well as an excellent full-bodied and rich tempranillo from Bodegas Calar in Spain. There is also a bottle of Niepoort Vintage Port.

Sparkling Wine

Raimes Classic Brut English Sparkling, Hampshire

A classic Champenoise three way blend of 51% Chardonnay, 29% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier. Raimes Classic Brut English Sparkling has a light golden colour with fine bubbles and a soft mousse in the mouth. The nose is fresh with lemon / citrus, stone fruit notes and hints of green apple with some toasty oak. The palate is fresh with more citrus notes, creamy texture and a refreshing, lingering finish with good acidity.

White Wines

Domaine Bailly Reverdy Sancerre La Mercy Dieu

Domaine Bailly Reverdy Sancerre La Mercy Dieu Blanc has a good clear pale straw, yellow colour. The nose has aromas of white blossom, acacia, zingy citrus fruits, a touch of gooseberry and chalky minerality. The palate is clean, fresh and pure with peach and apricot flavours and gentle smokey notes. A round and well-structured wine with great mouthfeel, acidity and a good mineral finish. A complex Sancerre with real depth.

Louis Jadot Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravieres

The Louis Jadot Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravieres vineyard is located in the Northern part of the village on a soil composed of alluvium. Gravières means little pebbles made of limestone which can be found all over the vineyard. This wine has a fantastic, bright and clear light golden colour. The nose shows strong aromas of brioche, pastries and fresh butter alongside citrus and oak-y notes. The palate is mellow and rich, well-structure and the wine has a very long finish.

Red Wines

Calar del Rio Mundo, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla

Calar del Rio Mundo Tempranillo has a lovely, vibrant dark purple / red colour. The nose is packed with dark fruits, cherries, plums and hints of spice. It is a full-bodied wine and dense in the mouth. The palate has lots of jammy dark fruit, dark cherries and plums, spices, a touch of fruitcake and hint of coconut-ty oak. This is a big powerful wine with grippy tannins and a dry, long and persistent finish. A wine that will age gracefully for many years. 100% Tempranillo.

Chateau Lagrange, St Julien 3ème Cru Classé 2010

Chateau Lagrange is one of the most famous third growths of Bordeaux. Deep and intense colour, red and black fruits aromas, toasted and vanilla notes. In the nose, impression of freshness. Attack very firm in mouth and increasing with an exceptional tannic richness. Powerful, smooth and harmonious tannins.

Port Wines

Niepoort Secundum 2000 Vintage Port

Niepoort Secundum is a style of Vintage Port designed for earlier drinking compared to Niepoort’s “main” vintage. At 18 year old this year this is softening up nicely. It is a perfectly rounded Vintage Port with lots of red berry fruit and great power. The grapes for Niepoort 2000 Secundum Vintage Port come from old vines in the Cima Corgo region and were foot trodden in lagares and later the Port was matured in large wooden vats at Niepoort’s lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia and bottled in the autumn of 2002.

From Niepoort: “Dark red in colour, with intense aromas of dark fruits along with a light herbaceous character. On the palate, massively concentrated, dense but fresh, with solid tannins, finishing long and persistent. Although great to taste now, will develop wonderfully over the next decades. To fully benefit from its qualities, we recommend it to be decanted before serving.
