Churchview Estate St Johns Limited Release Petit Verdot is a limited release red wine from the Margaret wine-growing region of Western Australia. The St Johns Limited Release range is reserved for some of the more unusual grape varieties to be found in Western Australia such as Zinfandel, Marsanne and Chenin Blanc.
Churchview Estate is an award-winning, family-owned wine producer located in the Margaret River wine-growing region of Western Australia. The estate was founded in 1999 by father and son team Spike and Raymond Fokkema and is situated near the locality of Metricup just off the Bussell Highway. Spike had emigrated from The Netherlands in the 1950s and had been a successful businessman prior to purchase. Today the estate is owned and run by Raymond Fokkema and his sister Sharon Bosveld (who joined the family business over 20 years ago). The winemaker is David Longden. Churchview Estate was awarded with a 5 star winery rating in James Halliday’s 2016 and 2020 classifications.
Churchview Estate takes it name from the view of the heritage listed Anglican Church of Saint John the Baptist which can be seen from the estate. The single vineyard estate comprises some 100 hectares with 56 hectares of vines. The site was carefully selected for its maritime climate, ideal and fertile gravelly loam soils, ample clean water and north facing slopes and 16 different grapes varieties are grown. Organic certification was awarded in 2020.
Petit Verdot is rarely bottled as a 100% varietal wine and is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. It was originally found in classic Bordeaux blends where it adds colour, tannin and, with some age, aromas and flavours of violets and leather. Indeed, it can be found in Churchview’s own, Bordeaux style blend.
The 100% Petit Verdot grapes for the Churchview Estate St Johns Limited Release Petit Verdot were machine harvested, picked at optimal ripeness and concentration, in the cool of the night. It is a late maturing variety, but 2020 had perfect conditions for the variety allowing for a dark, bold and seductive wine to be produced. The grapes were crushed and then fermented using a Bordeaux yeast strain. This was followed by 8-10 days of skin contact. Afterwards, the wine was transferred into second and third fill French oak barriques for maturation.
From Churchview:
Colour: Deep, dark red colour.
Nose: An intense red wine with lifted aromas of blackcurrants and dark cherries, intermingled with liquorice. The earthy, almost leathery note is apparent with subtle oak nuances.
Palate: This wine is not for the novice. This is a serious wine
that deserves respect and your full attention. Intense, dark fruit loaded mid-palate, with firm tannins adding a grip on the cheeks and teeth. The fresh acid line serves to cleanse the palate leaving a great mix of dark fruits and dry, savoury elements.
