Description

Churchview Estate The Bartondale Chardonnay is the flagship white wine from Churchview. Produced from their old block Chardonnay which is cane pruned each year.

Churchview Estate is an award-winning, family-owned wine producer located in the Margaret River wine-growing region of Western Australia. Founded in 1999 by father and son team Spike and Raymond Fokkema, the estate is situated near Metricup, just off the Bussell Highway. Spike emigrated from the Netherlands in the 1950s and was a successful businessman before acquiring the estate. Today, the estate is managed by Raymond Fokkema and his sister, Sharon Bosveld, who joined the family business over 20 years ago. The winemaker is David Longden. Churchview Estate received a 5-star winery rating in James Halliday’s classifications for both 2016 and 2020.

The estate derives its name from the view of the heritage-listed Anglican Church of Saint John the Baptist, which is visible from the property. The single-vineyard estate spans approximately 100 hectares, with 56 hectares dedicated to vines. The site was carefully selected for its maritime climate, fertile gravelly loam soils, ample clean water, and north-facing slopes, where 16 different grape varieties are cultivated. The estate earned organic certification in 2020.

Churchview Estate produces several different ranges of wine. The flagship offerings include the limited-release, handcrafted Bartondale range, named after the dairy farm that originally occupied the site. Following this is the St Johns range, featuring more unusual grape varieties, named after the aforementioned neighbouring church. Additionally, there is the fruit-driven Silverleaf range.

The grapes for the Churchview Estate The Bartondale Chardonnay is hand harvested in the early part of the morning and stored in a cool room overnight to ensure the fruit is cold for processing the next day. The day after the harvest, the chilled fruit is hand loaded into the press and the juice is transferred directly into new and used French Oak barriques. The barriques are hand loaded into a refrigerated area where spontaneous wild fermentation is encouraged, followed by 12 months of barrel maturation. During this time, the wine was continuously stirred and topped until barrel selection and bottling.

The Bartondale Chardonnay is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Tasting Notes

Colour: A brilliant light straw

Aroma: Intensely aromatic with freshly squeezed lemon and lime overlaying freshly baked turron. This aroma is complexed with some toasty notes and almond meal.

Flavour: A flavoursome Chardonnay. The palate is fresh with lemon and lime leading the way. This wine has many layers of flavour underlying the bright fruits – the savoury almond meal adds definition and the fresh citrus acidity keeps it all nice and fresh. This wine is all about line and length. A long finish of toasty butterscotch is complimented with some great texture.
