Description

Cline Cellars Late Harvest Mourvedre is a sweet, red dessert wine made by Cline Cellars.

In 1982, on leaving university, Fred Cline returned to his hometown Oakley, Contra Costa County (equidistant between Sacramento and San Francisco) to found the company that would become Cline Cellars. There he started producing wines and restoring ancient vines. Today, Zinfandel, Carignane and Mourvèdre produced from these vines are some of the most unique and historic wines made in California – the coming together of the climate, the soil and the landscape are the epitome of Oakley terroir. In 1991, the winery relocated from Oakley to the Carneros region of Sonoma County on a historic 350-acre estate with new vineyards and facilities. While much of the cool Carneros region is planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot, Fred Cline pioneered the planting of Rhône varieties including Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne.

The grapes for Cline Cellars Late Harvest Mourvedre are sourced from the family’s Big Break Vineyard. The vines are planted in deep sand-soil, which is dry-farmed, and benefits from the drying winds that blow through Contra Costa County. The grapes for this wine are left on the vine until they are super ripe and dehydrated so that they have incredible natural sweetness. The cooling winds means that the grapes can be left on the vine longer to ripen and dehydrate without risk of mould. Around 25% of the Mourvedre grapes are raisined by the time they are harvested and taken to the winery and they produce about half the juice compared with the Mourvedre grapes used for Cline’s table wines. The juice is fermented using only indigenous yeasts and, after about 3 weeks the wine was racked to 30% new French oak barrels allowing the fruit flavours to show through without being masked by the oak. 100% Mourvedre.

Cline Cellars Late Harvest Mourvedre is a vegan and vegetarian friendly wine.

Tasting Notes

Cline Cellars Late Harvest Mourvedre is a luxuriously sweet wine and divinely tempting. Layers of coffee, After-Eight chocolates, plum, black berries and prunes dominate but they are beautifully balanced with a firm structure of acid and fine grained tannins.

Food Pairing

A wonderful accompaniment to rich chocolatey desserts like chocolate mousse, brie with mango chutney, or salted caramel chocolate squares. Try with a Chocolate Balsamic Drizzled Cheesecake.
