Description

Domaine Faiveley Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle is red wine from the Cote de Nuit wine growing region of Burgundy. The Pinot Noir grapes for this wine come “Petite Chapelle”, a small parcel situated just below the “Chapelle du Dessus” which has now been re-named “Chapelle-Chambertin” Grand Cru.

Domaine Faiveley was founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley and has passed through seven generations of the the family since then. The company headquarters can be found in Nuit St Georges and has been run since 2007 by Erwan Faiveley. Today the family owns over 120 hectares of vineyards in Burgundy including 10 hectares of grand cru vineyards, nearly 25 hectares of 1er cru vineyards and other vineyards including 68 hectares in the Cote Chalonnaise. The village of Gevrey Chambertin lies along the foot of the Côte-d’Or escarpment, to the south of Dijon and with the broad Saône valley plain to its east. Is is perhaps one of the most famous red Burgundy appellations.

The Petit Chapelle vineyard has an easterly exposition with pebbly soils and cover just 0.42 acres. The vines were planted in 1987. Grapes are harvested and sorted by hand. The proportion of de-stemmed grapes and whole clusters varies depending on the vintage. The wines are punched down daily in order to extract colour, tannins and aromas from the skin of the grapes. After a 19 day vatting period, the alcoholic fermentation is complete. The free-run wine is run off using a gravity system whilst the marc is pressed slowly and gently in order to extract an exceptionally pure press wine. The wines are then aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (40-50% new oak and 50-60% one-wine barrels) which were selected for their fine grain and moderate toast. The wines are left to age in Faiveley’s hygrometry-controlled cellars at consistent, natural temperatures.
