Description
Domaine Jones Fitou is Southern French red wine made by Katie Jones in the in the Languedoc Roussillon. Fitou is one of the largest appellations in the Languedoc-Roussillon and is responsible for large volumes of what could be described as not particularly great wine. Fortunately there are some small, high quality producers, like Domaine Jones, who are producing some fantastic wines including this Fitou (check out the Domaine Jones Rouge if you like this style of wine).
Domaine Jones is owned and run by Katie Jones. Katie was the Sales and Marketing Director for the Mont Tauch co-operative in the Languedoc for nearly twenty years until she fell in love with and soon acquired a small 3.5 hectare vineyard in the Maury Valley in 2007. Katie had never made wine before and had to learn the ropes very quickly and, initially with help from a locally-based Australian wine-maker David Morrison, Domaine Jones was soon producing and releasing wine. Katie says of her wines: “I use traditional, down-to-earth farming methods, and want my vineyards to express themselves naturally, I’ve also employed new, innovative wine making techniques to enhance the character of the wines.”
Today Katie does pretty much everything at Domaine Jones including winemaking and looking after the vineyards. She also finds time to collaborate with her winemaker husband Jean Marc (his family own Domaine des Rebouls in Fitou) on the fresh and lovely Apres La Pluie Rose.
Domaine Jones has expanded pretty quickly and Katie snapped up any parcels of old vines that she could. The grapes for the Domaine Jones Fitou now come 13 small parcels of vineyards owned by Katie in the villages of Tuchan and Paziol. Most of the vines are over 100 years old and produce tiny quantities of fruit. The wine is a traditional Fitou blend of Carignan, Grenache and Syrah sourced from small plots planted with just one grape variety, on a different soil types, this allows for more control of the blending. There is some oak-ageing.
