Domaine Jones Grenache Noir is a southern French red wine form the Languedoc Roussillon Wine Region. The 2012 is made mainly from Grenache Noir and is bottled as a Cotes Catalanes Indication Geographic Protegee (IGP).
The owner and winemaker of Domaine Jones is Englishwoman Katie Jones. Katie was originally working for a local wine co-operative when she fell in love with a small 3.5 hectare old vine vineyard in the village of Tuchan in 2007. Tuchan is located in the department of Aude, not far from famous wine village of Maury. Domaine Jones Red and White were the first two wines to be produced (2018 was the 10th vintage) which was followed by the acquisition of a vineyard in Fitou. Along the way Katie married French winemaker Jean-Marc Astruc whose family also have vineyards in Fitou and today there are many more Jones wine projects, including the Along Came Jones and La Perle Rare ranges, some of which are made in conjunction with Jean-Marc.
The original Domaine Jones vineyard is situated in the shadow of Queribus Castle surrounded by wild scrub or garrigue, and consists of over 8000 vines on slopes of black schist planted with Carignan, Grenache Noir, Grenache Gris and Muscat. The vines here are predominantly over 70 years old. The vine age, altitude and stony, slate soils produce naturally very low-yielding vines. The lower the yield, the higher the quality. The wine-making philosophy at Domaine Jones is to employ traditional, down-to-earth farming methods and innovative winemaking techniques to capture the characteristics of the terroir and the local area. The Cotes Catalanes IGP covers the same area as the Pyrénées-Orientales administrative department and is an IGP that encompasses wines made in the region outside of more specific appellations in the region such as Banyuls or Cotes du Roussillon.
Domaine Jones wines are only produced in very small quantities, this truly is boutique wine-making. They really are hand-made wines that have a surprising purity and freshness, due to the relatively high altitude of the vineyards that is unusual for wines from this area. Katie says of her wines: “I use traditional, down-to-earth farming methods, and want my vineyards to express themselves naturally, I’ve also employed new, innovative wine making techniques to enhance the character of the wines.”
Domaine Jones Grenache Noir 2012 is made principally from Grenache Noir with minimal oaking. This was previously known as Domaine Jones Rouge and included some Carignan in the blend.
