Domaine Regnard Santenay Rouge is a red Burgundy made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes from the appellation of Santenay. Santenay is located in the southern part of Burgundy, the Côte de Beaune, adjacent to Chassagne Montrachet.

Domaine Regnard is located in the heart of the Marange wine-growing appellation in the commune of Sampigny-lès-Maranges. The estate was established shortly after World War 1 when Auguste Regnard acquired the family’s first vines. Since 2010, the estate has been in the hands of fourth generation wine producer, Florian and his partner Camille. Vineyard expansion, a new modern winery and further investment has produced a noticeable increase in quality. The estate consists of various plots of vines, totalling 17 hectares, located in prestigious appellations including Maranges, Santenay and Chassagne-Montrachet. The estate practices sustainable agriculture using working methods respectful of nature with little mechanization and working mainly by hand. The winery follows traditional winemaking practices, with an emphasis on minimal intervention and allowing the grapes to express their natural flavors and aromas.

The 100% Pinot Noir grapes for Domaine Regnard Santenay Rouge come from a parcel of vines planted on clay-limestone soils which has an average age of 20 to 30 years old. After hand harvesting the grapes undergo a careful sorting and complete destemming. They are placed into vats and undergo a cold maceration for approximately a week. Fermentation is made with native yeasts with a further period of maceration. Finally the wine is matured 15 months, 12 months in French oak barrels (25% new), prior to release.

The Santenay appellation produces both red and white wines, from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay respectively, that still fly a little bit under the radar. The red wines wines from often exhibit a combination of rich fruit flavours, subtle earthiness, and a firm structure. These wines have the potential to age well, allowing the flavours to develop and evolve over time, around 5 to 7 years if cellared correctly.

Tasting Notes

Domaine Regnard Santenay Rouge has a bright ruby red colour. The nose is aromatic with lifted red fruits, cherries, strawberries, peonies and hints of spice. The palate is medium to light bodied, with more red berry fruits and a wonderfully pure, fresh acidity.

Food Pairing

Try with braised veal or beef or chocolate cake for a more unusual pairing.

For the cheeseboard try with mature cheeses, or cheeses from the region including Brie de Meaux, Pont-l’évêque, Cîteaux, Reblochon and Bleu de Bresse.
