Doorlys 14 Year Old Rum is a premium Bajan rum first released to the UK market in 2019 and is part of their permanent range of rums. It is a blend of pot still and column still rums aged for 14 years with a small component aged in ex Madeira wine cask for 14 years.
Doorlys 14 Year Old Rum is made by R L Seale & Co, one of Barbados’ oldest trading houses. It is produced at the Foursquare Rum Distillery which is located on the gentle southern slopes of the St George Valley in the Parish of St Philip. The Foursquare Rum distillery was built in 1995 and the first rum was distilled in 1996. It is is one of the most modern and efficient rum distilleries in the world as well as being extremely efficient and environmentally friendly. The distillery is built on the site of a former sugar factory dating back to 1636, the first in Barbados. R L Seale & Co was founded in 1926 and is a family-owned business whose involvement in rum-making extends from father-to-son since 1820. Master distiller, Richard Seale, is one of the region’s most innovative distillers and blenders and has a passion for producing perfect rum with great flavour. Martin Doorly & Co was one of the old Bridgetown rum bottling companies (founded in the 1920s) and the Doorly’s Rum brand was acquired by R L Seale in 1993.
Doorlys 14 Year Old Rum is a blend of pot still and column still rums, the pot still brings complexity, depth and weight to the blend whilst the column still brings a good balance or aroma and flavour. The rums are statically aged for a full 14 years in small American oak casks which leads to complex character with delicate aromas, something that only time can produce. There is also a small component aged in ex Madeira wine casks, this brings some chocolate and marmalade character to final rum. The rums are blended and allowed to marry together for a period so the rums fully integrate, prior to bottling. Richard Seale campaigns for transparency in rum production and labelling. It is therefore not surprising to that the back label notes that a little spirit caramel is added to restore the natural colour after the rum is diluted to bottling strength. Otherwise the rum is bottled without any sugar, sweetener or other flavours added (which cannot be said for many other rums). It is bottled as a good strength of 48% ABV, a little stronger than the younger Doorly’s Rums.
Doorlys 14 Year Old Rum, in keeping with the rest of the Doorly’s Macaw Rum range, this rum features a macaw on the label, in this case the rare and endangered Blue Throated Macaw.
