Description

Dows 1991 Vintage Port in 75cl bottles. According to Symington Family Estates, 1991 was the “first declared Vintage for six years, the longest gap between declarations for decades, was an excellent, widely-declared year and produced richly coloured and aromatic wines of great promise. The best will age for decades.”

Dow’s Port is one of the most famous names in the Port trade and today is owned and managed by the fifth generation of the Symington family. The family, whose experience dates back over 100 years, supervises all the vineyards, winemaking and ageing of this wine. Dows acquired Quinta Senhora da Ribeira and Quinta do Bomfim in 1890 and 1896 respectively which made it one of the first Port firms to invest in their own premium vineyards. Dow tend to ferment their Ports a little longer than some of the other Port house, this means that the wines are a little dryer, although still sweet and rich, than some other house’s Port wines.

Dow’s Vintage Ports are only produced or ‘declared’ in years of exceptional quality and represent a very small percentage (2 – 3%) of total Port production. The backbone of Dows Vintage Port is drawn from the companies’ finest vineyards, Quinta do Bomfim and Senhora da Riberia, each property contributing to the wines unique character and class. Aged in wood for approximately 2 years and bottled unfiltered, Dow’s Vintage Ports are considered to be amongst the finest Vintage Ports produced. These fine wines can be enjoyed young and vibrant or allowed to aged for many years in bottle, developing their very own style, very different from all wood aged Ports.

Dows 1991 Vintage Port will require decanting. Read our “How to Decant Port” guide.

Perfect for a 30th birthday present in 2021.

Tasting Notes

“Due to the summer heat, yields were well down on previous years. Consequently only a small quantity of Dow’s 1991 Vintage Port was bottled. The wine is in the great tradition of Dow’s Vintage Ports. It is very dark with very good colour colour, excellent balance of tannins and acidity and an exceptionally attractive and concentrated nose. This Vintage has structure and quality, placing it amongst the finest Vintages produced in the postwar years.” Symington Family Tasting Room, 2006
