El Gobernador Pisco is a Chilean Pisco produced from Muscatel of Alexandría and Rosé Muscatel grapes. It is made by Miguel Torres Chile. Pisco is a type of grape brandy that is most famously associated with Peru and Chile. It is made from fermented grape juice and is known for its distinctive, robust flavour and is most famously served in a Pisco Sour cocktail.
Miguel Torres have had operations in Chile since 1979 when the company acquired a small wine in Curico in the Chilean central valley and were one of the first foreign firms to invest in the country. The original 100 hectares bought in 1979 has now grown, some thirty years later to 445 hectares of vineyards all owned by Torres Chile. Since 2010 Miguel Torres Chile has been directed by Miguel Torres Maczassek, a fifth generation Torres winemaker who moved to Chile with his family in order to maintain the tradition and passion for winemaking that the Torres family has demonstrated all these years.
The Torres family have a long history of distillation and the production of spirits. In 1928 Juan Torres Casals began distilling his wines to make brandy in the Penedès region of Spain and Torres today are very well-know for their superb Spanish brandies, particularly their fabulous Jaime 1. Miguel Torres Chile produced their first Pisco at their Limari Valley winery in 2012. The Limarí valley is renowned for the calcium rich soils unique to the north of Chile, producing wines of higher acidity (lower ph) than in other areas, these exhibit a strong mineral character unique to these soils.
El Gobernador Pisco is made a 50/50 blend of the the local grape varieties Muscatel of Alexandría, more usally found in dessert wines, and Rosé Muscatel. It is produced by a single distillation using a copper alembic still, a process designed to preserve the terpenic aromas of the muscatel variety. By using the naturally acidic wines from Limarí Torres can create a more flavourful and aromatically expressive spirit.
“El Gobernador”os the Spanish for the Governor.
Bottled at 40% ABV
El Gobernador Pisco has a brilliant, clear spirit with silver highlights. The nose displays exuberant floral scent with notes of rose and jasmine, with a hint of candied citrus peel. On the palate, it is appetizing, full and round, even creamy, with a long and persistent aftertaste.
Perfect in a Pisco Sour.
