Description

Emrich-Schonleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Spatlese is a German white wine, 100% Riesling, from the Nahe wine growing-region. It is classified as a VDP Grosses Gewächs (GG). Grosses Gewächs is a classification used for dry, single-variety wines from Germany’s leading vineyards, known as Grosse Lage (equivalent to grand cru vineyards in France’s Burgundy region).

The estate’s wine-growing beginnings began in 1965, From 1965 until 1985 Wilhelm Schönleber (a native Swabian from southern Germany), followed by son Werner Schönleber, turned the  family’s previously mixed farm into a purely winegrowing estate, expanding the vineyard area from approximately 2 to 10 hectares. In quick time, the estate developed a stellar reputation. In 1991 they made it onto  a list of “Germany’s top 100 wineries” and in 1994 became a member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP), the world’s oldest association of elite wine estates.

The estate is located in the municipality of Monzingen and today comprises nearly 20 hectares of vineyards mainly planted with Riesling. Monzingen is located on the western fringes of the Nahe winegrowing area. The Monzinger Halenberg vineyard is the smallest of their “grand cru” vineyards at 5.5 hectares and is planted exclusively with Riesling. The vineyard is south facing with gradients of up to 70% planted on blue slate and quartzite soils.

Emrich-Schonleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Spatlese has an inherent, finely structured, minerally saltiness and the wines often reveals aromas reminiscent of ripe grapefruit and other exotic fruits.

Tasting Notes

A spätlese of aromatic fruit complexity, with grapefruit, mango and melon notes, remarkable finesse and no small measure of tension as this glides across the palate. Finishing very fresh, this is extremely easy to love.
