Errazuriz Kai is the estate’s flagship and most sophisticated Carmenere. Errazuriz Kai acheived fame at a 2010 Blind Tasting in New York when the 2003 vintage secured first place beating many world-famous wines including Opus One, Haut Brion, Lafite and Sassicaia in the process.
Errazuriz Estate was founded in 1870 when Don Maximiano Errazuriz planted his first vineyards at Panquehue in the Aconcagua Valley – 100km North of the capital. Today, the tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano’s descendant Eduardo Chadwick. Eduardo is the fifth generation of his family to be involved in the wine business. Errazuriz’s philosophy is best expressed by Don Maximiano who said, “From the best land, the best wine.”
The grapes for the Errazuriz Kai Carmenere 2010 are sourced from the best parcels of vines in Errazuriz’s Max V Vineyard in the Aconcagua Valley. The Carmenere vines were planted in 1992 and 1993 on deep alluvial, well-drainig soils with 50% stone component. This combined with cooling breezes from the nearby Pacific Ocean allows a long growing season to fully ripen the Carmenere grapes giving good concentration, colour, texture, ripeness are fruit flavours. The grapes are hand-picked and sorted twice prior to vinification in stainless steel. The carmenere undergoes several aerating pumpovers were carried out to aid the polymerization of the reactive tannins, eliminate potential herbaceous notes, and help set the colour.
Errazuriz Kai Carmenere 2010 is a blend of 96% Carmenere and 4% Petit Verdot. The wine is aged for 20 months in 90% new French oak barrels with malolactic fermentation.
KAI comes from the word “plant” in the language of the native peoples of Chile.
