Falkland Islands 40th Anniversary Port bottled by Niepoort Vinhos. This limited edition bottling of Dirk Niepoort’s fantastic Ruby Port features a special label to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War. The label design is stone-fired on to the bottle.

Niepoort Vinhos is a family-owned company now in its fifth generation and presently managed by Dirk Niepoort. Despite being the second smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports, they have now joined the ranks of the great producers of Vintage Port. “Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors but they are producing outstanding wines which very few can match.” (James Suckling, Vintage Port). Niepoort Ruby Port is the entry point into Dirk Niepoort’s range of Port wines. Niepoort believes that the colour of the port should be inspired by the “rubi stone” (instead of black dark colour Ruby). 

The grapes for the Falkland Islands 40th Anniversary Port come from low yielding old vineyards in the Cima Corgo region of Douro Valley. The grapes are predominantly trodden in old, granite lagares, prior to ageing in large wooden vats at Niepoort’s lodges in Gaia where the Port is bottled with an average age of 3 years. The wine is a typical Douro Field Blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and other grape varieties.

Niepoort and Fareham Wine Cellar (Peake Wine Associates S&W) have had a long association and have provided special Port labels for various Royal Naval ships and shore bases including HMS Sultan, HMS Collingwood, Northwood Headquarters and many others over the years. It was only natural that we collaborate on a commemorative label for the 40th Anniversary of the Falkland Islands War and for the many events taking place in 2022.
