Finlaggan Red Wine Cask Islay Single Malt Whisky is an Islay Single Malt finished in red wine hogshead casks sourced from the Rioja wine growing region in Spain.
Much like its sister whisky, the Finlaggan Old Reserve, it is a secret Islay malt. The name of the distillery from which it comes is a closely guarded secret and known to only a select few. This whisky is named after Finlaggan, a historic site on Islay, Many centuries ago,the Lord of the Isles ruled Scotland from the stronghold of Finlaggan Castle on Islay which is situated 2kms to the northwest of Ballygrant.
Finlaggan is bottled by The Vintage Malt Whisky Co. (VMWC) who also bottle another secret Islay malt whisky called The Ileach as well as the Cooper’s Choice range of single barrel bottlings. The VMWC was founded by Brian Cook in 1992, Brian is a honours graduate in Food Science with twenty year’s experience in the malt whisky industry, latterly as Export Director for one of Scotland’s principal distillers. The aim of the VMWC is to produce a range of malt whiskies from Scotland’s finest distilleries and to make them available to independent wine and spirit importers throughout the world. There is plenty of discussion on whisky forums about the origin of the single malt whisky that goes into the Finlaggan and I have seen people who think it is Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Caol Ila, Bunnahabhain, Ledaig or Ardbeg. Suffice to say, no-one knows for sure, but I am sure one of these must be right!
The period of red wine maturation add sweet red fruit notes to this heavily peated Islay Malt Whisky. A no age statement bottling at 46% ABV and without chill-filtering. The first batch was a bottling of 7000 bottles.
