Florio Morsi di Luce is a dessert wine from Sicily bottled as a Vino Liquoroso Di Sicilia IGT. Cantine Florio has a rich history but the are probably most famous for being one of the oldest, and best quality, producers of Marsala Wine. As well as a superb range of Marsala wine, they also make a range of passito wines, sweet wines and sparkling sweet wines.
The Zibibbo grapes for Florio Morsi di Luce are sourced exclusively from Florio’s vineyards on the island of Pantelleria, off the southern coast of Sicily. The volcanic island is rich in dark soil and steep hillsides. The vineyards are terraced between 50 and 100m with bush trained vines planted in small ditches to protect them from the scorching heat and African winds. The grapes are left on the vine as long as possible to increase the sugar concentration and are hand harvested, crushed and left in contact with the skins for a short period. Pressing is gently pneumatic and fermentation is at a controlled 17 – 18c. Once the fermenting wines attains an alcoholic volume of 5-6%, a neutral grape spirit is added killing the fermentation process and leaving the natural grape sugars to produce a sweet wine. The resulting wine is thus fortified to around 16% abv. The wine is then aged for 10 months in a selection of old and new 225L barrels and 8 months in bottle before release.
Florio Morsi Di Luce is made from 100% Zibibbo grapes. Zibibbo is the local name for Muscat de Alexandria, one of the most famous grape varieties for making dessert wines. The famous wine Moscato di Pantelleria Naturale is made mostly from Zibibbo grapes.
