Description

Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port is Fonseca’s equivalent to a single quinta Port. A Port made in the same way as a vintage Port but in an undeclared vintage. It offers great value whilst demonstrating true Fonseca character and style.

Fonseca is truly in the top tier of Vintage Port houses and is recognised for the consistency of style and quality developed by five generations of the same family since the firm’s foundation in 1822. In the early 1950’s the rising demand for vintage ports led Fonseca to create a second vintage port under the “Fonseca Guimaraens” label in non-classic, or undeclared years. The grapes for Fonseca Guimaraens Port are sourced from Fonseca’s three Quintas – all located in the Cima Corgo: Quinta de Santo António (which is now organic), Quinta do Cruzeiro, and Quinta do Panascal. All three properties are A-rated, and were purchased by the firm in the 1970s. The former two had been under contract to Fonseca in the early 1900s.

Fonseca Guimaraens Port is somewhat earlier maturing than Fonseca’s vintage Ports. They are aged in Fonseca’s lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia and are only released for sale upon reaching maturity, which may be a decade or more after the vintage date.

Winemaker is David Guimaraens.

Tasting Notes

From Fonseca: “Very deep purple black with violet highlights. As would be expected of a Guimaraens Vintage Port, the first impression on the nose is of a powerful detonation of blackberry, cassis, strawberry and woodland fruit. These exuberant berry aromas are seasoned with notes of coffee, treacle and spice and surrounded by a fragrant balsamic aura of gum cistus and mint. The intense fruit flows through the palate like a thick blackcurrant coulis. The palate is supported by a taut fabric of closely woven tannins and the long finish resounds with a final blast of sumptuous ripe berry flavour.”

Food Pairing

Try with walnuts and dried fruits such as apricots and figs. A classic match for blue-veined cheeses.
