Description

Four Roses Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is distilled at the Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. As a small batch whisky, it is made from a blend of a relatively small selection of barrels (there is currently no law that defines what small batch is).

The history of Four Roses can be traced back to 1888 when founder Paul Jones Jr. moved his thriving business to Louisville, Kentucky, where he opened an office in “Whiskey Row”. Four years later, he trademarked the name Four Roses, claiming production and sales back to the 1860s. The business prospered and, in 1922, the Paul Jones Company purchased the Frankfort Distilling Company. This was eventually purchased by Seagram in 1943 who actually stopped selling Four Roses Bourbon in the USA to concentrate on the European and Asian markets. Most recently the company was bought by Kirin Brewery Company Ltd. in 2002. Legendary Master Distiller Jim Rutledge, who joined Seagram in 1966, is principally responsible for the renaissance of Four Roses and became Master Distiller in 1995. Jim retired in 2015 but, by then, Four Roses Bourbon had been sold in the USA since 2004 and has become one of the most respected Bourbon brands. Brent Elliott, who worked alongside Jim for 10 years, is now the company’s new Master Distiller.

Four Roses is the only Bourbon distillery who combines five proprietary yeast strains with two separate mashbills to produce ten distinct Bourbon Recipes. One mashbill is 60% corn, and the other is 75% corn. The lower corn mashbill contains 35% rye; significantly more than other Bourbons, resulting in a spicy, full-bodied taste. There are 5 different yeast strains which produce the following characteristics: V – Delicate Fruit, K – Slight Spice, O – Rich Fruit, Q – Floral Essence and F – Herbal Notes. The art of the distiller is to carefully blend these to produce a balanced whisky. There is an interesting recipe infographic demonstrating the recipes at the Four Roses Website.

Four Roses Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a blend of four distinct Bourbons. The whiskies are aged at Four Roses unique single-story rack Warehouse and Bottling Facility nestled in the quiet Kentucky countryside at Cox’s Creek. The whiskies are carefully aged here prior to blending.
