Description

Fritz Willi Riesling is made by Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium in the Mosel and is distinguished by a, by German standards, modern-looking label.

Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium takes its name from the Jesuit school founded in Trier in 1561 and wine has been produced for centuries from the estate vineyards which helped to support the school. The historic cellars lie underneath the city of Trier and one of the stones in the foundation bears the date 1561. Today the estate consists of 25 hectares of vineyards located on the steep slopes of Mosel and Saar.  Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium grows exclusively Riesling which is all hand harvested and vinification is either in stainless steel or in traditional Mosel ‘Fuder’ (1000 litre barrels). Both parts are blended later to add complexity. The wine rests on its fine lees before bottling.

Fritz Willi Riesling is a refreshing medium-dry style of riesling. It is labelled as “Feinherb”. The term Feinherb is an unregulated designation for a wine slightly sweeter than halbtrocken.
