Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese Trocken is a fruity, dry riesling from the Mosel. Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium has along and prestigious history, the name originates from the Jesuit school founded in Trier in 1561, and grapes were alwyas grown to financially support the school. Today Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium has some 25 hectares of vineyards the internationally renowned steep slate slopes of the Middle Mosel: Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst, Bernkasteler Badstube, and Trittenheimer Apotheke. On the Saar, near Trier, they farm about 13 hectares in Falkensteiner Hofberg. Graach is a small village that lies between Bernkastel and Wehlen. This vineyards steep, southwest-facing slopes and deep soils produce wines that combine the elegance of Wehlen with the rustic strength of Bernkastel. Because of the forceful minerality of the abundant blue slate in the soil, wines from Graach have excellent aging potential and will improve in the bottle for many decades. FWG’s Graacher Himmelriech vineyard is on a south-westrnfacing slope with good exposure to the sun and covers 2.9 hectares in total, the vineyard has grey Devonian slate soils and an excellent water supply. After careful picking and selection the grapes are fermented in 1000L oak Fuders and stainless steel tanks. Both parts are later blended to add complexity. The wine rests on its fine lees for a few months before bottling.
