Gaja Dagromis Barolo is made from 100% Nebbiolo sourced from vineyards in Serralunga and La Morra. It is bottled as a Barolo Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG for short). The wine was first produced in 1998.
Gaja is simply one of the most famous Italian wine producers. The business was founded in 1859 in Langhe, Piedmont by Giovanni Gaja and it is his great grandson, Angelo Gaja, who currently runs the company. They are most famous for classic Piedmont wines such as this Barolo and their fantastic Barbaresco. Indeed, Angelo has often been referred to as the “King of Barbaresco” and has been responsible for developing techniques that have revolutionised winemaking in Italy. As well as their estate and vineyards in Piedmont Gaja also have two estates in Tuscany, Pieve Santa Restituta and Ca’Marcanda. Whereas the concentration in Piedmont and at Pieve Santa Restituta is on more traditional wines, the focus at Ca’Marcanda is on international grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot) and “Super-Tuscan” style blends like the Promis and Magari.
As mentioned above, the vineyards for the Gaja Dagromis Barolo are located in Serralunga (next to Gaja’s Sperss vineyard) and La Morra (next to the Conteisa vineyard). The vineyards were purchased by Gaja from the Gromis family in 1995, hence the name. The wine is an expression of two of the greatest terroirs of Barolo. The parcels from each vineyard are vinified separately and undergo fermentation, maceration and ageing in oak for 10 months. The wines are then blended and aged together for another 18 months prior to bottling.
Gaja Dagromis Barolo is known for its elegance and complexity. Ths wine is characterised by aromas of violet, rose petals, and white pepper, with flavorus of red fruit, citrus, and earthy notes. It has a well-balanced structure with noticeable but fine tannins. It is well-known for its aging potential.
Violet, rose petals and white pepper rise from the glass. A pleasant freshness to the palate with juicy red orange and grapefruit notes. Fragrant, medium in body and well balanced. An initial dry sensation from the oak, that softens with time. Noticeable tannins, yet fine. About to bloom, its harmonious complexity foretells a promising ageing potential. An elegant Barolo, Dagromis.
