Inner Circle Red Dot Rum is a dark Australian rum made from sugar cane grown in Fiji.
The origins of Inner Circle Rum lie with the Colonial Sugar Refinery Company (CSR) which was founded in 1855. CSR built its first rum distillery in New South Wales in 1873, followed up with distilleries in Fiji in 1890 and Sydney in 1901 and began developing the Inner Circle brand in the 1950’s. In 1986, the distilling interests of the sugar company were sold off and the brand became part of the Diageo portfolio, although they never bottled under the brand name.
In 2000 Stuart Gilbert, a former Olympic yachtsman, searching for what had become of his favourite brand, became acquainted with Malcolm Campbell (Inner Circle’s distiller from 1972-1986). Campbell still had the original recipe in his care and indeed still had a sample of the original yeast. So Gilbert acquired the rights to the brand and by 2004 had purchased and re-built the old Beenleigh Rum Distillery, in Queensland, where today’s Inner Circle is now made. Inner Circle is now 100% Australian owned and operated.
From its first distillation, the first objective of Inner Circle Rum was to make the best rum possible. It is produced using the pot still method, rather than the continuous distillation method used by other commercial rums. Whilst this method is more labour intensive, it is generally agreed that pot still rums are of a higher quality.
