Mermaid Salt Vodka is a lightly sea salted, small batch vodka, made by the Isle of Wight Distillery. It is inspired by the fresh sea air and the hint of saltiness on the lips after a day spent on the water and is now presented the Isle of Wight Distillery’s fantastic new bottle.
The Isle of Wight Distillery was founded by a winemaker and a brewer who had long thought about making a gin. Conrad Gauntlet started growing vines and making wine at Rosemary vineyard in 1985 and, with over 30 acres of vineyards, is one of the largest wine producers on the Isle of Wight. Xavier Baker has been brewing beer since 1995 and first cut his teeth at the Ventnor Brewery and, after a couple of detours in whisky (Ireland and Scotland), setting up the Isle of Wight Meadery, he eventually arrived at Goddard’s Brewery near Ryde. The pair soon met and a plan to produce Gin was conceived. This has now been joined by the Mermaid Vodka, Pink Mermaid Gin, HMS Victory Rum and and imminent Isle of Wight Whisky.
Mermaid Salt Vodka is based on a very pure, neutral grain spirit which is then seasoned by just the right amount of locally sourced rock sea salt. Each batch is handcrafted using the distillery’s column still and then blended with Isle of Wight spring water in small batches and bottled at 40% abv.
Don’t be put off by the word salted, if you have ever had a fantastic salted caramel dessert or cocktail, that will give you the idea of how gentle this is. It is perfect neat, frozen or over ice but it also makes a great base for cocktails. Try in a Vodka Gimlet, Dirty Martini or a Salty Mule cocktail (fresh lime, a good measure of Mermaid Vodka topped up with a good ginger beer and a slice of lime).
