Kleine Zalze’s Project Z range of wines is a that allows the estate’s winemakers free reign to interact with nature, to search for the ultimate expression from a vineyard and to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation in order to keep growing and evolving. As well as this superb Grenache, there is also a Project Z Chenin Blanc, Chenin Blanc Skin Contact, Syrah and Sweet Fortified wine.
Kleine Zalze is a family owned winery situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands and winemaking their can be traced back to 1695. However, when Kobus Basson and his family bought the property in 1996, there was a massive stride forward. In 1996 the estate was scientifically mapped to find the best terroir for different grape varieties and seventeen years of subsequent investment have seen Kleine Zalze become one of the most highly regarded wineries in South Africa.
The grapes for the Kleine Zalze Project Z Grenache are sourced from an old bush-vine vineyard in the cool-climate region of Darling on the Cape West Coast. Growing untamed and unbridled in sandy soils and subjected to the maritime airflow off the Atlantic Ocean, the vineyard was selected for its ability to grow grapes offering a superior expression of the site’s unique geography. After harvest, the 100% Grenache grapes are fermented whole bunch in clay pots, first under a carbonic maceration and then light pump overs. The wine is then aged for 1 year in a single 500 litre Italian clay amphora.
There were just 563 bottles of the 2017 vintage produced.
Kleine Zalze Project Z Grenache has aromas of rose, red berries, dried herbs, a little spice and a hint of reduction. The palate shows pure fruit, zippy acidity and powdery tannins, the finish long and dry.
