Krohn 2016 Vintage Port presented in 75cl bottle. The 2016 vintage was selected as a “Classic” vintage by Krohn and displays excellent tannic structure but with and the elegance characteristic of the vintage.

Krohn or, Wiese and Krohn to give its full name, was founded in 1865 by two young Norwegians, Theodor Wiese & Dankert Krohn. Edmundo Falcão Carneiro acquired the company in the 1930s and Wiese and Krohn was run by the second and third generations of the Falcão Carneiro family until 2013. Krohn Port was acquired by the Fladgate Partnership (owners of Taylor, Croft and Fonseca) in 2013. Krohn’s stocks of Port reach over 5 million litres and are stored in six cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and one cellar in the Douro Region. They have exceptional stocks of aged tawny Port and colheita Port dating back to 1863. The Fladgate Partnership earned the prestigious BES Biodiversity prize in 2009 (recognising achievement in the fields of conservation and environmental sustainability), and since then these practices have been extended to cover the Krohn estate.

The grapes for Krohn’s Vintage Ports are sourced from old vine vineyards at Krohn’s famous Quinta do Retiro Novo estate in Sarzedinho in the Rio Torto Valley where all their vineyards are rated as “A grade”. Some grapes are also sourced from neighbouring growers in the Rio Torte. These are all old vine vineyards planted on schistous soils. The grapes are trodden by foot at the quinta in large granite “lagares” where the wine also undergoes fermentation. Fermentation is stopped with the addition of grape spirit when the desired level of sweetness is achieved. The Port was then aged in ‘pipes’ and larger casks. This is a typical Douro field blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Barroca. 

Krohn 2016 Vintage Port will require decanting.

Tasting Notes

From Krohn: “Deep ruby black with narrow purple rim. A nose of wonderfully pure, vibrant red fruit, with crisp aromas of cranberry, raspberry and cherry and lively notes of plum and apricot. Emerging in turn from behind this curtain of fresh fruit are spicy aromas of black pepper and nutmeg, warm notes of mocha and scents of cedar wood and balsamic herbs. In contrast, the palate is voluptuous, with dense, mouth filling tannins providing both body and firmness and a thick coulis of black woodland fruit that flows into the endless finish. Although the first impression is of an ethereal purity, the wine develops an intricate complexity in the glass and displays the powerful but beautifully integrated tannins which are a hallmark of the vintage.”

Decant and serve with well-matured farmhouse cheeses including Stilton or Gorgonzola. Also try Steak au Poivre with a young Vintage.
