Ktima Vourvoukeli Limnio is a dry Greek red wine. It is bottled as a Protected Geographical Indication Advira which is an appellation located in Thrace, Northern Greece. Advira was once a thriving region for Greek wine production but the vineyards were destroyed at the end of the 19th century and most locals turned to tobacco as a sustainable crop.

Ktima Vourvoukeli (Ktima is the Greek word for “estate”) was founded fairly recently in 1999 by Nikos and Flora Vourvoukeli when they planted 2 hectares of grapes, including both local and international varieties with the intention of trying to revive wine-making in Advira once again. Their two sons, Georgios and Odysseas, are now involved wine-growing and wine-making. Today the vineyards have grown to over 12 hectares which are cultivated accordance with the regulations for organic farming. They completed a new winery in 2004 which is fitted with state of the art wine making equipment.

Vourvoukeli Estate Limnio is made from 100% Limnio grapes. It originates from the island of Lemnos in the Aegean Sea and has been grown for over 2000 years. It was mentioned by both Homer and Aristotle. It is known for producing full-bodied, herbaceous wines with a distinctive taste of bay leaves. It is also known a Kalambaki. To me it has similarities to Carignan.

The grapes are harvested, usually at the end of September, from vineyards with a halky substratum covered by lime stones pebbles. The grapes undergo a period of skin contact for 1 week at 12 to 15c. 50% of the juice is free run. The juice is then fermented in stainless steel vats at 21 to 23c with a short period of lees ageing followed by 6 months ageing in oak barrels.
