Description

La Cepa de Pelayo “La Cepa de Pelaya” Bobal is a red wine from the DO Manchuelo and is made from 100% Bobal Grapes. It is made from the estate’s oldest vines and is their flagship red wine.

Bodega La Cepa de Pelayo is an exciting winery located near the village of Alcalá del Júcar in the province of Albacete in Eastern Spain. The wine-making history at La Cepa de Pelayo stretches back three generations. The third generation are committed to producing a range of wines in an artisanal way whilst respecting the environment – a return to the methods of their grandparents, who made wine just for their family. The project began in 2016.

The wines are bottled under the Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) Manchuel0, which was founded in 2004 when it separated from La Mancha DOP. The family specialise in productions of the red grape variety Bobal but also grow some Cencibel (Tempranillo) and Macabeu. The vineyards grown organically without the use of herbicides or pesticides.

The estate comprises of three vineyards all located at a height of 700 metres above sea level on calcareous soils. Navarro’s Vineyard has average vine age of 46 years old. It is 2 hectares in area and is planted with Bobal. Hurriaga Vineyard has an average age of 46 years old and covers 3.8 hectares, again planted with Bobal. The Corral del largo vineyard is the largest and youngest: the vines here have an age of 31 years old and it covers some 8 hectares. This vineyard is planted with Bobal and Macabeo.

Starting at night and in the cool early hours of the morning, the grapes are harvested by hand into small crates and kept refrigerated so that they arrive at the winery in best possible condition. Each plot of vines is vinified separately and fermentation takes place in fully temperature controlled concrete vats. 

La Cepa de Pelayo “La Cepa de Pelaya” Bobal is produced using a careful selection of the estate’s oldest vines grown on calcareous and clay-calcareous soils. The wine is aged 10 months on the less in a combination of 20% in concrete tanks and 80% in French oak barrels. The wine in barrel is aged between 12 to 16 months in the best quality French oak barrels to enhance aromas of red fruit and produce a high quality wine.

Tasting Notes

“La Cepa de Pelaya” Bobal has a deep, intense red colour. The nose is primarily dominated by red and black fruit aromas including cassis and blackcurrant, there are also spicy nuances of black pepper and floral hints. This is mid-weight on the palate with more dark fruit, peppery spices and toasted notes. The palate has lovely freshness and good acidity with good length.
