La Crema Monterey Chardonnay is produced from vineyards in one of the coolest, longest growing regions in California. The 90 mile long Monterey Valley stretch from Monterey Bay, stretching south through farmland and rolling hills and is always buffeted by the cold winds that sweep in off the Pacific Ocean. As La Crema say, “Each sip says Monterey. Smooth and elegant. Bright and exotic. Fresh. Spicy. And just a little wild.”
Founded over 30 years ago, La Crema began life at their Russian River Valley estate. Over the years, however, they have specialised in sourcing grapes from California’s cool coastal regions including Russian River Valley, Los Carneros, Anderson Valley, Sonoma Coast and Monterey. To this one can now add their exciting new project in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Head Winemaker, Craig McAllister, employs a combination of traditional Burgundian wine making techniques and modern Californian style.
La Crema Monterey Chardonnay is defined by the cooling sea breezes of the Pacific Ocean combined with abundant sunshine. These strong winds, combined with scarce rainfall, lower yields. Small berries hang on the vine, ripening slowly, providing the desirable combination of vivid natural acidity and full maturity in the fruit.
The fruit is a mix of hand and machine picked, which is gently pressed followed by twenty-four hours of settling before being racked to barrel for fermentation. Fifteen percent of the lot was co-inoculated with the house strain of malolactic bacteria. The barrels were then used to top the remainder of the lot during post primary fermentation and the lees were stirred monthly. La Crema Monterey Chardonnay is 100% Chardonnay aged for 5 to 6 months in barrels prior to release (70% French and 30% American oak – 16% of which is new).
La Crema Monterey Chardonnay is suitable for vegetarians.
From La Crema Winemaker, Craig McAllister: “Aromas of baked apple, graham cracker, meyer lemon and pineapple are followed by flavours of Asian pear, orange-tangerine and notes of minerality. The 2021 vintage presents balanced acidity and a long finish.”
Try with Dungeness crab or pan-sautéed sole, or any fish and shellfish are ideal with this wine. Cheese like manchego is another fantastic option.
