Louis Latour Corton Grand Cru “Domaine Latour” is made from carefully selected grapes which are grown on the south-easterly facing slopes of the hill of Corton. Corton it is the largest grand cru vineyards in Burgundy and produces red and white wines.
The Latour family have long been established in Burgundy’s wine trade. They began as vine growers in the village of Aloxe-Corton as early as 1768 and went on to establish today’s business, Maison Louis Latour in 1797. Today they are one of the region’s most famous names creating wines from their own 50 hectare domaine in the Côte d’Or and from grapes and wines purchased through the negociant arm of the business. The company has been in family ownership for 11 generations and is now led by the 7th Louis Latour. He is ably supported by Chief winemaker Jean Charles Thomas, and Denis Fetzmann and Boris Champy who run the Domaine.
As mentioned above, the 100% Pinot grapes for Louis Latour Corton Grand Cru come from specially selected south-easterly facing parcels of vines (namely Clos du Roi, Les Bressandes, Les Grèves, Les Perrières) on the Montagne de Corton. The vines have an average age 40 years old and are planted on marl / limestone soils. The vines are managed in the traditional way by the Louis Latour team which carries out strict pruning in order to produce later harvests thus insuring a good degree of maturity in the grapes.
The 100% Pinot Noir grapes are destemmed and vinified in open vats. The wine is then aged for 10 to 12 months in French oak barrels (15% new). The barrels are from the Louis Latour cooperage and are medium toasted.
Louis Latour Corton Grand Cru is ruby in colour and reveals aromas of cherry and liquorice on the nose. The palate is supple with mellow tannins. On the finish, liquorice aromas are accompanied by pretty spice notes.
Try with Beef “Bourguignon”, wild boar and mature cheeses.
