Description

Louis Latour Grand Ardeche Chardonnay is a superb, oaky Chardonnay from outside of Louis Latour’s usual home of Burgundy. The Latour family have long been established in Burgundy’s wine trade. They began as vinegrowers in the village of Aloxe-Corton as early as 1768 and went on to establish today’s business, Maison Louis Latour, in 1797. Today they are one of the region’s most famous names creating wines from their own 50 hectare domaine in the Côte d’Or and from grapes and wines purchased through the negociant arm of the business.

Louis Latour have had a presence in the Ardeche since 1979. The Ardèche region is situated to the west of the Rhone valley. The fertility of the soils was discovered by the Romans who have left abundant proof of having thrived in this attractive part of France. Latour work very closely with around 100 local growers who, between them, own 380 hectares of vineyards. They all have long term contracts and Latour help them adopt sustainable viticultural and fair working practices whilst also adhering to strict requirements for grape quality and lower than usual yields. The hillside vineyards were chosen after a 12 year search for the best terroirs are located at a relatively high altitude of 270 metres on clay / limestone soils. This combined with consistency of climate and abundant sunshine allow the grapes to perfectly ripen, whilst the drying Mistral wind eliminates the risk of rot. The wines are made at Latour’s state of the art winery in the village of Alba-La Romaine.

Louis Latour Grand Ardeche Chardonnay is treated as if it were grown in one of the Grand Cru vineyards of the Côte-d’Or. It is bottled as an Indication Geographique Protegee Ardeche (IGP Ardeche). Fully-ripened grapes are selected and pressed lightly before being aged in oak barrels made at the Latour cooperage in Beaune. The wine undergoes maturation for 8 to 10 months in medium toasted French oak barrels (20% new) with 100% malolactic fermentation. The result is a full-bodied wine that is smooth with notes reminiscent of exotic fruits and vanilla spice imparted by the oak.

Louis Latour’s other main project outside of Burgundy is their Domaine de Valmoissine Pinot Noir in the Var.
