Description

Louis Latour Macon Lugny Les Genievres is one of Louis Latour’s most popular (and very good value for money) white Burgundies. As the name would suggest it comes from the Maconnais wine-growing region which is located in the south of Burgundy, west of the Saone River. As well as Macon Lugny and other Macon village wines, the region is also home to other wine-growing appellations including Macon Prissé, St Veran, Viré-Clessé, Pouilly Vinzelles and, arguably the most famous wine of the Maconnais, Pouilly Fuissé.

The Latour family have long been established in Burgundy’s wine trade. They family started as vine growers in the village of Aloxe-Corton as early as 1768 and went on to found today’s business, Maison Louis Latour, in 1797. Today they are one of the most famous producers and negociants in Burgundy and are steadfastly family-owned after 11 generations. Maison Louis Latour also have their own cooperage and make over 2000 barrels per annum.

The 100% Chardonnay grapes for Louis Latour Macon Lugny Les Genievres are rigorously carefully selected from the well-exposed commune of Lugny, which 30 years ago, was the only Macon village planted with Chardonnay due to its ideal Chardonnay-growing terroir. The soils here are clay and limestone and, with its warm climate, Lugny is often considered to be one the very best vineyards in the region of Southern Burgundy. The Chardonnay grapes undergo a traditional vinification with fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is also allowed to undergoes malolactic fermentation. The wine is then rested for 8 to 10 months in stainless steel vats prior to bottling.

If you are wondering, Genièvre, is the French name for Common Juniper.
