Description

Pommard 1er Cru Epenots is one of the best known “Climats” in Pommard and is considered, by many, along with Pommard Rugiens, to produce some of the best Pinot Noir in the appellation. Indeed producers in Rugiens, Epenots and Pommard Clos des Epeneaux have been lobbying the French national appellation authority (the INAO) to have their vineyards elevated to Grand Cru status.

The Latour family have long been established in Burgundy’s wine trade. They began as vinegrowers in the village of Aloxe-Corton as early as 1768 and went on to establish today’s business, Maison Louis Latour, in 1797. Today they are one of the region’s most famous wine producers.

Pommard is the first village encountered as one drives south from Beaune. It is an appellation that produces only red wines and most of the have an east to south-east orientation. Pommard Epenots is situated at the northern end of the Pommard commune, which is located in the south of the Cote de Beaune. The Epenots vineyard faces south east and the soils here consist of mainly clay and limestone. Louis Latour’s vines have an average age of 30 years old and the yields are kept low at 40 hectolictres per hectare.

The grapes for Louis Latour Pommard 1er Cru Epenots are harvested by hand and undergo a traditional Burgundian vinification. Fermentation is in traditional open top oak vats. The wine is then aged for 10 to 12 months in medium-toasted French oak barrels, 35% of which are new, from Louis Latour’s own cooperage.

The name Pommard Epenots derives from the French word “épine” which means thorn or prickle which describes the local bush-like, thorny vegetation.
