Luis Seabra Xisto Ilimitado is a red wine from the Douro wine-growing region of Portugal. It is a Douro field blend.
In 2012, after nearly 10 years as Dirk Niepoort’s right hand man and head oenologist working at Niepoort’s Quinta de Napoles winery Luis Seabra decided it was time to start making wines for himself. Luis has set out to produce a range of wines which show what can be achieved from the distinct soils types and the different terroirs of the Douro Valley. The wines are produced from specific vineyards and are made with minimal intervention. The only thing added is sulphur, and then only in small amounts. The house style edges towards balance and finesse.
Luis Seabra Xisto Ilimitado is made from grapes sourced from vineyards in the Cima Corgo. It is a field blend of Douro grape varieties – Rufete, Touriga Franca, Tinta Carvalha, Alicante Bouchet, Donzelinho and Malvasia Negra. 30% of the wine was foot trodden and fermented in stone lagar and the remainder, 100% whole cluster, is fermented in vat, in both cases with indigenous yeast. The lagar component was macerated for 8 days, the component in the vat for 25 days. The wine is racked of to old oak barrels for a maturation period of 1 year and a further 5 months in vat prior to bottling.
Luis Seabra Xisto Ilimitado is a wine with complex aromas, with notes of fresh fruit, forest berry and pine needles, with a slight smoky note. In the mouth it is intense and fresh, with great depth, with very present acidity, showing a solid structure with present, lively and balanced tannin. The aftertaste is long and persistent.
This wine goes well with dishes made with reductions and jus of the meat itself, dishes with truffles and mushrooms, lamb and kid meat or meat aged over the grill.
