Lyme Bay Pinot Noir is an English red wine produced from grapes sourced from 5 vineyards in Essex. The vineyards / growers are Martin’s Lane (Essex); Missing Gate (Essex); PW Robinson (Essex); Crows Lane (Essex) and GW Cooper (Essex).
The Lyme bay Winery was founded by Nigel Howard and has made its name over the years for the production of a wide range of fruit wine, ciders, meads and liqueurs from their base in the Axe Valley in Devon. Whilst they still produce a wide range of these products, Lyme Bay Winery planted 26,000 vines in 2009 and 2010 within a stone’s throw of the winery and have since branched out with a good range of still and sparkling English wines. As well as farming their own vines, they also buy grapes from other grape growers in the South of England and argue that “truly special wines are born from grapes with diverse backgrounds.” Lyme Bay work with group of outstanding growers with vineyards all over England who plant the right grapes for the climate they are in to obtain the best ripeness for wine production.
A beautiful, long, hot summer in 2020 enabled the grapes to fully ripen on the vine, resulting in a Lyme Bay Pinot Noir with good intensity of flavour and body. Grapes were harvested between the 3rd and 20th October 2020 from Dijon & Spätburgunder still wine clones only, each clone from each identified vineyard underwent its own specific protocol. Small batch fermentations were undertaken with manual pigéage (punch downs) to gently maximise the extraction of colour, flavour and structure. The wine was then transferred to barrel for 100% malolactic fermentation and ageing. 30% new French oak was used as well as experimental American and Eastern European oak. The wine then aged for 9 months in barrel, the batches were then blended and left to settle for 2 weeks before bottling. The wine has no fining or filtration to retain the delicate nuances of the fruit and oak. It demonstrates forward primary fruit character synonymous with young vines that will develop in intensity and potential even further with time.
Colour: Black Cherry with lighter edge tones.
Nose: Intense, red fruit combines with smoky, vanilla oak and mild tobacco overtones.
Palate: Red stone fruit notes of cherry & plum blend blackcurrant, strawberry & toasty oak to give a rich, but balanced weight on the palate and a mouth-watering finish that lingers & evolves.
