Description

Marimar Estate La Masia Pinot Noir is made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes from Marimar Torres’ Don Miguel Vineyard in the Russian River.

Owner Marimar Torres is the sister of Miguel Torres, patriarch and CEO of the world-famous Torres Spanish wine company. Marimar Torres began planting vines in 1986 and it is the only Californian vineyards to be totally planted in the European style – the vines are planted on a south west facing vertical training system. The grafts are Phylloxera resistant and the planting density is 5000 vines per hectare, which is about four times more than the traditional Californian planting density. These characteristics favour competition among plants and roots, reducing yield in the plants. The vines live for longer in this way and develop more intense and elegant aromas, greater concentration of flavours and more balance. The wine is named “La Masia”, which means “the farmhouse” in the language of Catalan from Marimar Torres’ home region in Spain. The winery is designed to look like a classic Catalan farmhouse. The winery was completed in 1992 and sits on a hill surrounded by the vineyards. The Don Miguel vineyard is a 56-acre property in a cool microclimate ideally suited to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Marimar Estate La Masia Pinot Noir is made from a blend of several clones of Pinot Noir, the 2016 is composed of 19% Swan, 40% Pommard, 29% Dijon 115 and 12% Dijon 667. The grapes undergo minimal crushing and are fermented in stainless steel. The wine is aged in premium French oak barrels, 30% new, coopered by Remond, Rousseau and Marchive from the forests of Bertranges, Allier and Central France. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Marimar Estate’s Don Miguel Vineyard is now 100% Organic. This wine is also suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

The wine is named “La Masia”, which means “the farmhouse” in the language of Catalan from Marimar Torres’ home region in Spain. The winery is designed to look like a classic Catalan farmhouse.

Tasting Notes

Bright classic colour and nose, reminiscent of raspberries and black cherries, with savory notes of orange peel and sage, sandalwood and sassafras. The palate has scents of violets and orange blossoms, with soft tannins that promise a long life.

The wine will continue to develop for another 10-15 years, maybe more. Serve at cellar temperature, between 58-60° F.
