Description

McHenry Hohnen Burnside Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is a white wine made from grapes grown in the Margaret River wine-growing region of Australia.

The Hohnen and McHenry families had been growing grapes in Western Australia since the 1970s but it was until 2006 that David Hohnen joined his brother-in-law Murray McHenry to found McHenry Hohnen. They source grapes from family-owned vineyards sites around the southern part of the Margaret River wine-growing region. The Mediterranean climate of the Margaret River is perfectly suited to growing varieties associated with southern France and Spain as well reflecting the regions heritage with Bordeaux varieties. Common sense farming philosophies are employed, cultivating a system in which soil and its organisms, along with plants, insects and animals co-exist in a thriving equilibrium. Vineyard management embraces sustainable ‘old school’ practices following biodynamic principles.

The grapes for McHenry Hohnen Burnside Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc come from McHenry Hohnen’s 1981 planting on the Burnside Vineyard. The organic and dry grown vines yield small but intensely flavoured fruit. The rich solid soil structure (clay and loam) has been aided by many years of biodynamic farming practices including heavy composting and controlled grazing. After a hand harvest the grapes are fermented in a combination of concrete, oak barrels (20% new) and tank with indigenous yeasts. The wine is matured for 10 months prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes

McHenry Hohnen Burnside Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc has aromas of lychee, guava and ripe mango aromas with nutty notes from extended lees contact. The palate is full flavoured with a core of ripe tropical fruit balanced by a salty but creamy acid line. On the finish, some flinty notes add to the complexity of this wine.
