Mezan Trinidad 2009 Vintage Rum is part of the Mezan range of single distillery bottlings of rum.
The idea behind the range is to bring to the consumer the story of the diversity of rum amongst the Caribbean Islands – styles and methods of production, and therefore the rums vary widely. Mezan rums are also bottled as natural as possible – after the casks have been selected – they are not chill-filtered, nor is there any colour, sugar or other flavourings added. Originally there were more than 50 rums producers in Trinidad, by 1950 that number had reduced to eight and today there is only one, Angostura Ltd. Rum is produced here by Trinidad Distillers Limited (TDL), a wholly-owned company of Angostura Holdings (who also own Angostura Bitters). The distillery is a state of the art with seven column stills.
The most recent bottlings of Mezan rum now provide much more information about the rum in the bottle, which is very good news. So I can tell you that Mezan Trinidad 2007 Vintage Rum is a molasses based rum made at Trinidad Distillers Limited. The molasses was fermented for 48 hours using a daily propagated own recipe yeast which is then fermented in TDL’s stainless steel mulit column stills. The rum is distilled to between 80 and 95% abv and is a blend with a high proportion of lighter distillates. The rum is then aged in first fill American Bourbon barrels in the Carribean before it was shipped to European cellars and vatted into barrels which has previously held older Trinidadian rums.
Distilled in 2009, bottled at 12 years old in 2021 at 46% abv. Age 12 Years. Tropical Ageing 3 Years. European Ageing 9 Years.
Light spicy oak with touches of vanilla, leather and cedar wood. The flavour continues with some leafy banana and tropical fruit leading to a little honey and preserved orange. The finish is finely tuned with complex oak notes and a little burnt sugar.
