Description

Miguel Torres Conde de Superunda is a red wine blend from Curico and sits alongside the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Manso de Velasco as Miguel Torres Chile’s two top red wines. Whereas the Manso de Valesco demonstrates what can be done with old vine Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile, the Superunda demonstrates the skill of the winemaker in blending different grape varieties to produce something really special.

Miguel Torres was one of the first foreign investors to buy land in Chile attracted by the special climatic conditions of this region. In 1979 Torres purchased one hundred hectares of vineyard and a winery in the Curicó area. With him, Miguel Torres brought his family’s long tradition of wine-making and over one hundred years of company history. Miguel Torres has purchased another two vineyards (‘fundos’) and now owns some three hundred and thirty hectares of vineyard located around Curicó. Over many years Torres has experimented with old Chilean and Spanish vines of different varieties in order to produce Conde de Superunda.

Miguel Torres Conde de Superunda is a blend of 59% Tempranillo, 21% Monastrell 16% Cabernet
Sauvignon y 4% Carmenere all harvested in the Curico valley. The vineyards are located on soils of fluvial and alluvial origin , very deep clay loam, with the presence of small rounded clasts at different depths. Moderately acidic pH, with very low fertility. The grapes undergo a maceration period of 30 days followed by an 8 day alcoholic fermentation at 27-29C. It is aged for 22 months in new French (Nevers) oak barrels.

The name Superunda refers to the action of Spanish nobleman, José Antonio Manso de Velasco, during the tragic tsunami in El Callao, Lima, in 1746, where he used his wooden ships to help save the population affected by the great sea surge. The King of Spain himself awarded Manso de Velasco with the noble title Count of Superunda in 1748 which translates as “above the waves.”
