Monkey 47 Gin is a small batch gin made by Black Forest Distillers in Germany. It is made from a neutral molasses based spirit, soft spring water from the Black Forest and is bottled non chill-filtered. The botanicals used are only the freshest, handpicked ingredients, with at least one third of them obtained from the Black Forest, complimented by spices from India and traditional London Dry notes. There are 47 botanical used, hence the name. One of the key botanicals is lingonberry and others include spruce, elderflower, blackthorn, bramble leaves and fresh cranberries. The complex distillation process involves both steam extraction and distillation of the macerated botanicals. Of course, juniper is amongst the botanicals as are citrus peels from bitter oranges, lemons and pomelos. Other botanicals include marsh grains of paradise, mallow, lavender, scarlet monarda and coriander. Monkey 47 Gin is named after an eccentic englishman, name Monty Collins, and his monkey, Max. An eccentirc military man, Collins found himself helping rebuild Berlin Zoo after World War II. He lived in the black forest and produced his own gin. Black Forest Distillers adopted his recipe and released their first gin in 2008, named after Collins and his monkey and the 47 botanicals used in its preparation.
