Description

Mossburn Single Cask Springbank 1999 is a single vintage, single cask, third party bottling of Campbeltown Single Malt Whisky. It is part of Mossburn’s Single Cask range, a collection of Single Malt Scotch Whiskies each issuing from a strictly limited and select batch of casks.

Mossburn Distillers & Blenders is a brand new Scotch whisky project owned by Marussia Beverage which is part of the empire controlled by Swedish billionaire Frederik Paulsen. The company is headquartered at Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders on the site of the former Jedforest Hotel. Their new distillery, called Reivers Distillery, will be one of the first new distilleries to be built in the Borders for over 150 years. Mossburn have also established Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye, which opened in 2017 (the second distillery on Skye after Highland Park). The parent company also own the Kaikyo Distillery in Japan which produces Hatozaki whiskies. Not content with this, they have also created the peaty Caisteal Chamuis whisky range. The first Mossburn bottlings were released in 2017. Building a whisky distillery and waiting for whisky to come online (the spirit has to be aged for at least 3 years before it can even be called whisky) is a long term project. So, in the meantime, Mossburn have started the ball rolling by bottling a small collection of ever-changing single malt whiskies and two permanent blended malts, an Island and Speyside, with bespoke cask bills. There are also some very limited occasional single cask bottlings.

The Springbank Distillery is located in on the Kintyre Peninsula in western Scotland and was established by the Reid Brothers in 1828. Today it is owned by J&A Mitchell & Company who also own the Glengyle distillery, and independent bottler Cadenheads. Springbank is the only Scottish distillery to perform every step in the whisky-making process, from malting the barley to bottling the spirit

Mossburn Single Cask Springbank 1999 was distilled in October 1999 and bottled as a 22 year old in October 2021.

Bottled, non chill filtered, natural colour at a cask strength of 54.7% ABV.

Only 206 bottles produced.

Tasting Notes

Mossburn Single Cask Springbank 1999 displays well aged notes of leather, pencil shavings, dried peel and a little woodsmoke at the back make for an attractive nose with just a little marzipan and bitter red cherry coming along later. The palate is balanced out with the weight of wood and a sense of sweeter rancio from the ageing. Finishes with persistent oaky spice and a little vanilla beeswax.
